If you recently got a new dog, one of the first things you should teach him is to sit. Fortunately, sit is one of the easiest dog commands to teach. Just remember to have patience and not to raise your voice or sound frustrated during the entire training process. Otherwise, your dog will sense that you’re frustrated, and he won’t want to learn from you.

Dogs pick up on our body language and non-verbal cues much more frequently than most people realize!

How To Teach Your Dog To Sit

The following video shows you step-by-step how to teach your dog to sit:

  • Make sure you have a treat at all times.
  • Put the treat in front of your dog’s nose.
  • Guide your dog (with the treat in front of his nose) into the sit position.
  • The minute your dog begins to sit, say “Sit..” Praise him for sitting, and give him the treat.

You can teach your dog the down position the same way:

  • Get your dog into the sit position with the treat in front of his nose.
  • Take the treat to the floor.
  • If your dog’s bottom pops up, then start over.
  • As soon as your dog is in the down position, praise him and give him a treat.

Now, watch these steps in action:
