QUICK POLL: Big Dog or Little Dog? Male Dog or Female Dog?
I'm hoping at least a few of you who visit this page will take a quick second to reply in the Comments below:
"Big" (or "Little", or "Both")
and...
"Male" (or "Female", or "Both")
...in reference to your actual experiences as a dog owner.
The Question:
Have you mostly had little female dogs? Little male dogs? Big female dogs? Or big male dogs?
Or, have you had a little bit of everything, in which case "Both sizes" or "Both genders" would be the appropriate answer.
I'm simply wondering what most people's preferences are when it comes to choosing a dog and if they notice any "obvious trends" in those choices.
My Personal Experience
For me, my reply to this question is: "Male, Big dogs"
And it's always been that way for me -- from the time I started choosing my own dogs as companions over 20 years ago.
I have no real desire to ever switch to female dogs or smaller dogs either. Not for any particular reason, other than the fact that I've had many good years with large male dogs. And that's what I know best: large male dog behavior.
Specifically, I kind of favor Lab-mix dogs, which are the breeds of our two current dogs. One is Lab-Golden Retriever and the other is Lab-Great Pyrenees -- both males.
The dog I had for 15 years (before those two) was a male American Eskimo -- which isn't exactly "large", but at 40 lbs, he was closer to a large dog than a small dog. (Our Lab-mixes are 80 pounds each.) And before that, I had a Siberian Husky.
So, back to the question at hand...
I'm just wondering if others find themselves following a similar pattern or not.
Have you always had the same size and gender dogs through the years? Or have you mixed things up a bit?
Thanks in advance for sharing!...
Big male dogs not that theres anything wrong with small or female dogs, I just seem to like and bond better and faster with big male dogs
Hi.
well we always had small females (my mother preference) but I recently (FINALLY!!) got my type of dog which is big male and like you a have always prefer lab mix. The one I just got is a mountain bernese with lab. I find him gorgeous, but I do have a question for you since this is the first time I have ever have this type of dog. Is it normal for him to be non afressive at all and to like to be cuddle so much? When my mother gets angry for example the first thing he will do is to show his tummy and just lie there instead of going away or trying to escape from where he did something that he wasn't suppose to do. Even when a dog attack him he did not defend himself, I had to go defend him from the other dog. Yet he is very social with any animal.
hey
i like chihuahuas, i plan to get one next year (when i'm 16) but i live on an island where there is no breeders so it's difficult and my mum said i can't have one. I don't like the fact that celebrities have stolen the chihuahua and made them into a fashion icon though. I have a greyhound lurcher type dog, shes medium size gorgeous and black and she is called Ronia xxxxxx
I've had males and females throughout my life. I really don't have a preference as to gender. Some folks will say that females are more loyal and less aggressive. But I haven't found that to be true. Since I am not a dog breeder, I have my dogs neutered/spayed so that I don't contribute to the unwanted puppy problem.
I prefer large-ish dogs. Currently we have a 110# Yellow Lab male; and 56# Aussie Shep cross; and a 30# Boxer/Pointer cross puppy who is 4 months old. I expect the pup will grow to about 75#.
I just like big dawgs.
I have had all Male Dogs and one femaile. 1st 2 were shih tzus (m/f), then I had a golden. Then a Siberian Husky. Then 2 chihs. I prefer big Dogs, the only small dog i would own is a chih, but even then most of them are completely nuerotic. Big males are my fav
I've always had female dogs. One medium, one large and my current one who is small, a 9lb Maltese named Marley. I've chosen female dogs because they are more protective of their family and don't lift their leg to mark.
