Bil-Jac Frozen Dog Food: A Review

Bil-Jac frozen dog food bag. Bil-Jac frozen dog food makes a great meal, a great treat, and a great "reward" for your dog.

Here's why...

Bil-Jac Makes Dog Training Easier

Jim and I were first introduced to frozen Bil-Jac at Destin's puppy training class several years ago. The professional trainers used it as an "instant reward" treat for every good behavior that a dog would display. The dogs ate it up... literally. And it became obvious to us early on that Destin would do anything for some of that Bil-Jac food!

The best part (for training purposes, anyway) is the fact that it's small and pellet-shaped -- similar to rabbit pellets in shape and size. Plus, it's soft and pliable. This makes it easy to dole out in very small amounts for repeated rewards, say when you're training your dog to "heel".

For example, with the dog at your left side and a small handful of Bil-Jac nuggets in your left hand... given the command to "heel", your dog will instinctively follow your hand knowing that he'll get a smidgen of tasty Bil-Jac every few seconds. It worked great for us!

Bil-Jac Is A Great Daily Treat, Too

Our dogs get Bil-Jac frozen food treats every single day. Much like Alpo Liva-Snaps, they will do anything for a Bil-Jac treat... and their mouths begin drooling the moment they realize they're getting one!

That's why we try to reserve the Bil-Jac as more of a "luxury treat" for those times when the dog has gone above-and-beyond your "average" dog behavior.

Anytime the dogs have been really good, they get a few pieces of Bil-Jac frozen dogfood morsels.

Frozen Bil-Jac dog food in a zip-type bag for easy access. Plus, we always stuff some frozen Bil-Jac inside the dogs' Kong Toys anytime we leave them home alone for several hours at a time.

In fact, we reach for the Bil-Jac so often that we keep an ample supply of thawed out Frozen Bil-Jac in a Ziploc-type bag in the fridge. A zip-type bag stored on the door inside the refrigerator makes it a cinch to dip into several times throughout the day.

(For the record, a small 5 lb. bag of frozen Bil-Jac lasts over a month in our home -- with 2 dogs.)

Pros & Cons of Bil-Jac Frozen Dog Food

PRO'S
  • Bil-Jac doesn't have the typical dog food smell.
  • You can tell it's fresh by its smell, and how soft it is.
  • When it's being eaten, Bil-Jac doesn't leave crumbs like regular dog food does.
  • It's made of all real meat, with no fillers.
  • They say Bil-Jac is particularly good for for finicky eaters. (Our dogs aren't finicky, but they still love it!)
  • Given as a treat, we find the Bil-Jac Frozen to be quite inexpensive.
CON'S
  • The only downside that I can think of regarding frozen Bil-Jac is the fact that it must be refrigerated at all times.
  • This means that our dogs only receive this tasty treat when we're at home and when we've remembered to transfer some from the freezer to the refrigerator to thaw out.
  • Plus, it may be harder than most dog treats to find in local stores.

Where To Find Bil-Jac Frozen Dog Food

Our two dogs barking for their Bil-Jac! You'll have to look a little harder to find places that sell Bil-Jac frozen dog food. There are relatively few stores that carry it. I would recommend feed supply stores and non-commercial pet supply stores.

For example, the only place that carries Bil-Jac frozen dog food in my town is the local pet supply store called Nashville Pet Products Center.

Pet Smart sells the Bil-Jac dry dog food, but not the frozen kind. To date, we haven't tried the non-frozen version.

More About Bil-Jac

Bil-Jac dog food has been around for nearly 50 years. Today, Biljac's premium dog foods and treats are a staple in many dogs' diets.

We have only used the Bil-Jac Frozen dog food.

In fact, this was the first product the Bil-Jac company produced. (Having lasted all these years, they must be doing something right with the frozen Bil-Jac food product!)

UPDATE: For what it's worth, I found this posted by "duttycalls":

This company started as an idea by the owner to freeze dog food and it worked. He could then sell more nutritious/healthy foods without preservatives. Even now with people making their own dog foods at home Bil-Jac is still a much wanted product.

Justine,

There is a freezer full of it at PetSmart on Lover's Lane and Greenville. I am not sure about the other PetSmart's in DFW but I would imagine they carry it too.

where in dallas, texas area can i find bil-jac

Linda - I'm sorry it's taken me so long to reply to you. Somehow I missed your comment - until now.

To answer your question, I let the Biljac thaw in its 5lb bag the fridge. Then I break ALL of the 5lb bag into about 10-20 smaller ziploc freezer bags and refreeze them all.

The reason: because my dog only eats Biljac as a treat. So it takes us quite awhile to get thru a 5lb bag. I used to just keep the entire 5lb bag in the freezer, then chip away at it (with a butter knife) any time I wanted to make a new baggie for treats. But that got to be a chore -- and kind of messy.

This way, I'm only using small baggies of the Biljac at a time -- and the rest stays frozen (for a very long time). My experience is the Biljac baggies will last about 2-3 weeks in the fridge -- at which point mold starts to grow.

Hope that answers your question...

Caroline

You can put the frozen bag on a wooden board and chop it into sections with your meat cleaver..then put it in smaller freezer bags in the freezer. Easy to use then.. Actually it is the only thing we use the meat cleaver for...

Hi Lynnette.....not sure I understand your freeze and thaw process. When you bring your 5 pound bag of biljac home from the store, it is frozen. Are you letting it thaw out in the frig and then dividing it up into smaller portions and freezing those smaller portions again? Is it safe to thaw and then freeze again? We tried breaking up a 5lb bag of frozen Biljac into 2 or 3 large chunks so that we could put most of it back in the freezer and just keep 1/3 of the bag in the frig, but that is really hard to do. How long will the biljac last in the frig and do you have any idea how long a 5lb. bag would last a dog that eats 1 cup per day?
Thanks

You can purchase Bil-Jac Frozen at Kroger stores in Kentucky near Lexington. It is in the cold or frozen section (you may have to ask) Also Pet Supplies Plus, Pet smarts in various states sell the Frozen too or at least they use to - they do not sell it in the Lexington Stores anymore. I would call Bil-Jac and ask for a list of stores who sell their Frozen food and or email them. For some reason they do not advertise the Frozen ontheir website. I asked about this once and they said it is not listed because they can't ship it due to quality control (guaranteed freshness)

We do that too - buy a big bag, then just take out what we need as we need it.

Sally -
I would recommend doing what we do... Freeze, thaw, then refreeze the big 5lb bag each time you need "more".

I keep a medium-sized zip-type bag of Bil-Jac in the refrigerator at all times. I find that it lasts about a week or so in the fridge. When that baggie goes empty, I pull out what remains of the 5lb bag of Bil-Jac from the freezer & replenish the baggie.

That way, whenever I want to dole out a few pieces, I can just access the baggie from the fridge, grab a few pieces, then zip it shut & back in the fridge it goes.

We've been doing this for years.

Or... if you don't want to take that route, separate the entire 5lb bag into dozens of smaller Ziploc freezer-type bags right when you get the bag home after purchasing it. Keep one bag in the refrigerator, and when it runs out, transfer another one from the freezer to the fridge.

Or... if you have a FoodSaver, you could also seal dozens of single-use size portions of Bil-Jac. Put most of it in the freezer, and keep one in the refrigerator at all times.

How can I divide the frozen Bil Jac into small portions as we have a bite size eater. Bichon Frise. She really likes the food but I end up throwing over 1/2 bag in the trash. Could you package the frozen food in pint size containers. like caesars dog food.
