Raw Food (BARF Diet) vs Cooked Homemade Food

raw-food-for-dog-by-this-years-love.jpg As if the whole controversy of whether to make your own dog food or buy natural dog food were not difficult enough, along comes the idea of whether or not to feed your dog raw food versus cooked food.

Those who favor feeding their dogs raw food like to point out that, in the wild, dogs would only eat raw meat, so why not feed them raw food?

Personally, I can come up with a couple of reasons as to why I wouldn’t feed a dog raw food.

Basically, they are the same reasons I wouldn’t feed raw food to a person.

Reasons To Cook Your Dog’s Food

One of those reasons is salmonella poisoning, which dogs can get just as easily as humans can.

Do humans eat raw eggs and in some cases nearly raw meat?… Sure they do, but just because a person or a dog can eat raw food doesn’t necessarily mean that they should.

Something that many dog owners who feed their pets a raw diet don’t consider is the fact that salmonella bacteria can be transferred via dog feces and saliva. So, if your dog eats raw foods with salmonella bacteria and then licks your kid’s hand or face, your dog could be transferring the bacteria to your child who could become sick with salmonella poisoning. That’s one reason why I prefer cooking my dog’s food before serving it to him.

Another reason to cook your dog’s food is E. coli. (Here’s what you need to know about dogs and E. coli.) Plus, anyone who has been in a modern slaughter house knows that even though there is some attempt at being sanitary, those slaughtering and processing the meat aren’t always successful. In fact, if you’ve seen any of videos available on modern slaughter houses, or meat processing plants they can be enough to make you want to go vegetarian yourself!

Both E. coli and Salmonella organisms can infect other animals and people, so even though the majority of dogs may not exhibit symptoms, they can none-the-less pass the contamination to other animals or people. Serious outbreaks of these diseases can kill or debilitate children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems. Source

And finally, another point in favor of cooking your dog’s food, is that dogs have been eating cooked food for generations and their systems are accustomed to it now. In fact, a dog’s digestive system is not made to digest raw vegetables at all. For starters:

  • Dogs don’t have the teeth to grind vegetables down because their teeth are carnivore teeth.
  • Dogs have a short digestive system which is incapable of breaking down raw vegetables.
  • Dogs don’t have any digestive enzymes in their mouth to break plant matter down.

For all of these reasons, raw vegetables have a tendency to pass right through your dog giving him no chance to benefit from the nutrients that might otherwise be available to him were the vegetables cut down into small pieces and cooked.

Another possibility of course — if you want to keep feeding him raw food — is to puree the vegetables first. The same is true of grains, they must be cooked before your dog can digest them and receive the nutrients into his system.

One last thing to remember is that a dog’s digestive system is very sensitive, and switching from cooked food to raw food too quickly can be another problem for your dog and can cause serious digestive discomfort for him.

The B.A.R.F. Diet

Dog owners who feed their dogs a raw diet usually go with the BARF diet, which stands for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food or Bones And Raw Food.

A dog on the BARF diet is mainly fed raw bones that are meaty, offal (which is the organ part of the protein source), vegetables, cottage cheese, and eggs with their shells.

Those who provide their dogs the BARF diet typically believe:

  • dog-eating-cornish-hen-by-this-years-love.jpgSince dogs in the wild did not eat grains, and cannot easily digest them, then there is no reason to feed dogs grains now.
  • Since dogs ate raw foods in the wild, then cooking a dog’s food changes its chemical make-up making it more difficult for the dog to digest.
  • There is also the argument that raw foods give your dog’s diet variety, and this is necessary to keep the dog interested in his food and to keep him healthy.

Another Reason To Cook Homemade Dog Food

While I can understand some dog owners wanting to feed their pets a raw diet, one thing I think is important to remember is that all of our domesticated dogs were created from humans breeding wolves over millenia until we got the different breeds we have today.

To summarize:

  • Our dogs have been eating cooked food for generations, and they are no longer wolves and have not been for a very long time.
  • Treating our dogs’ digestive systems as though they are still out in the wild really doesn’t make sense to me because they’ve been domesticated for so long.
  • I think the evidence for cooked dog food being safer outweighs giving your dog a
raw food diet which can be dangerous to people because of the dog’s ability to pass bacteria from the raw food they are eating to us.

Yeah. You are doing something very typical to this society which is to anthropomorphize dogs.
The pH level of any canine is about ten (!) times higher than that of a human (no matter how long it had been domesticated) and every other anatomical feature of our dogs still points toward a meat based diet.
Or have you ever seen flat molars for grinding grains and plant matter in a dog ?
Your salmonella paranoia is also not quite logical given the very short and (as mentioned) very acidic digestive system of dogs.
Yes theyre digestive system is sensitive. Because it is not nearly as healthy as it could be. We run our pets to the vet for every little twitch they make afraid for their life, because their immune system is all messed up from all the crap we feed them.
Has anyone ever wondered why only domesticated dogs suffer from debilitating amounts of tooth decay and loss???
How can we simply acept that and all the other diseases our dogs are suffering from ( which only humans used to get) as a given factor in our dogs?? I
    don’t get it!
So all in all. Nope. You didn’t convince me.

I fed my dogs (2 beagles) raw for about 2 years. The only reason we stopped was because my female has such bad food allergies that I was running out of (affordable) options. I will admit, they were so much more active when they were on raw. Their skin and coats were nice and smooth, no bad breath and there were fewer poops.I agree with you, dogs aren’t “built” to consume grains, or even many veggies for that matter. Any vegetable they would get in the wild would come from the stomach contents of their prey, so it’d already be mostly digested. I say thumbs up to anyone who feeds raw.

i agree with other comments. dogs have different digest system, they are not human.
raw meats do carry bacteria but dogs have no problem digesting it. sorry im not buying it. I feed my dog raw meats and they love eating them. end.

People people canot eat raw food unless it is fruite or veg and some people eat eggs raw but meant no people can not eat raw meat people r not dogs.

People can eat raw meat. But our digestive tracts are longer than the canine tract, so bacteria such as salmonella and E.Coli have more time to populate in our tracts. Also, dogs have a higher PH than us, because they weren’t “built” to eat kibbles…they’re supposed to eat meats

What a spectacularly uninformed article! I’ve fed my dogs 100% raw for a combined 16 years and have never had a single vet bill or any of the problems you mentioned. Their teeth are white as a puppy’s, they have no dog breath, their stools are nearly odorless (because their digestion is so efficient and because their food isn’t full of grains and other fillers), they have eaten spoiled food (outdoors) and don’t get sick because their stomach acid and digestive enzymes are actually at functional levels, their muscles are strong and not squishy, they have bright eyes and the energy of puppies, etc…. One is 8 and the other is 9.

I fed my last dog a bit of raw but mostly quality kibble (eg no preservatives, good quality meat) and she didn’t do nearly as well as these dogs.

As far as vegetables, I puree them which makes them digestible. Dogs cannot break down whole vegetables but they aren’t harmful– they just pass whole in the stool.

dogs are meant to digest raw food, just putting it out there. yeah, typically they arent dogs anymore, but they arent humans are they?dogs have a special enzyme in their saliva that makes it pretty much safe for dogs to eat raw. now, grains are the problem.for the people that like to give their dogs dog cakes, use flourless recipes(quite easy to find, just look it up and alter it to your dogs benefit

Typical uneducated person telling others how to feed their dogs. Dogs are designed to eat raw meat; have been doing it for thousands of years and don’t get ill from salmonella, e-coli or the rest of the stuff that makes humans ill. Their gastrointestinal system is different than ours and has a much higher acid level that it kills the bacteria that makes humans sick if they eat raw meat. Want the facts on food for dogs – ask animal nutritionists; all of them will tell you to feed the appropriate diet for each species. For dogs and cats, this is raw meat. I can tell you that our dogs are incredibly healthy from eating a raw diet and we have no vet bills. The other factor you need to investigate is vaccines. That’s another thing that is destroying the health of our animals. Research – they don’t need them over and over again. How many polio vaccines did you get? One and it gave you lifetime coverage. Same for dogs and cats as long as they are 6 months old. Search Dr. Jean Dodds and Dr. Ronald Schultze – both are immunologists and say our animals are being over vaccinated.
