Doris Day Treats Dogs Like Royalty In California

| Comments (4)

dorisdaydogs.gif After watching a special on Animal Planet about the Cypress Inn (a luxury dog-friendly hotel that's owned by Doris Day), I decided to research a little more about this beloved actress and animal rights activist

Here's what I found...

Doris Day has always been an animal lover and an animal rights activist. One of her many endeavors has been to operate a luxury dog-friendly hotel called the Cypress Inn in California.

Located in the heart of Carmel-by-the Sea, the Cypress Inn is just blocks from the village's
famous beach, shops, galleries and restaurants.

You can view the rooms here.

Your pets are welcome at the Cypress Inn. We even offer pet sitting services and recommendations for dining with your pet in Carmel. Carmel is a pet friendly town where dogs can run free on Carmel Beach.

Dog-Friendly Restaurants, Too

doris-day-dog-friendly-hotel.jpg I was also fascinated by the degree to which the business owners at Carmel-by-the-Sea cater to dogs.

For example at Porta Bella (and several other restaurants there), they welcome your pet for lunch and dinner and even provide your pet with a water bowl -- we're talking a huge champagne bucket filled with sparkling cold water -- and biscuits. Many of the restaurants in this area even feature a special menu for your dog!

Dogs visiting Carmel on the Central Coast are well treated because many of the city's hotels, shops and galleries welcome canines with dog biscuits and special doggie menus at outside restaurants. At the Cypress Inn, co-owned by legendary film star Doris Day, man's best friend is the guest of honor with doggie blankets and evening turndown service and treats. The Forge in the Forest, a favorite restaurant among local residents, offers the Dog Pound menu. At Porta Bella waiters bring pups water in a champagne bucket. Source

I absolutely adore this woman. At sixteen when my family moved to Carmel I dreamed that I would run into Doris Day. My first introduction was at eight and dancing in the kitchen with my grandmother to her sweet and innocent music. I am now thirty and I cant help but have fond memories and smile when her music comes on. I will forever respect and hope one day to meet her. Oh yes, I am a vegetarian and member of a farm santuary.....have to love and respect our furry friends. Thanks Ms Day.

I, too, have always been a fan of Doris Day, partly because we both have a deep love for dogs; however, I was just totally shocked in checking out room rates for the Cypress Inn and seeing there is a charge for dogs. My 2 babies are my children (2lbs. and 3lbs.), and I resent being charged for them to stay in a room when they're better behaved than most 2-legged children for whom there is no extra fee. I'm very disappointed and no longer have a desire to spend any of my travel time staying at the inn.

I REALLY DO NOT KNOW HOW TO CONTACT MISS DAY, BUT I WISH SOMEONE WOULD PASS ON THIS MESSAGE TO HER.

I HAVE BEEN IN LOVE WITH DORIS DAY SINCE I WAS 16 YEARS OLD. I AM NOW 70 AND HAVE RETIRED TO HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE, AR.

SHE HAS ALWAYS SEEMED LIKE SUCH A SWEET AND CARING PERSON. I ALSO SHARE HER LOVE FOR ANIMALS AND ESPECIALLY DOGS.

I JUST SAW ON TELEVISION THE MOVIE "JUMBO" WHICH GOT ME TO THINKING ABOUT HER ONCE AGAIN.

DORIS DAY IN MY ESTIMATION IS ONE OF THE MOST UNDERATED STARS OF OUR TIME. I AM JUST A RETIRED BUSINESS EXECUTIVE, BUT I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT BEAUTIFUL SMILING FACE AND WILL BE IN LOVE WITH HER UNTIL THE DAY I DIE.

TRUE LOVE IS ENDURING AND LASTS FOREVER.

MY ONLY REGRET IN LIFE IS THAT I NEVER HAD THE OPPORTUNITY MEET MISS DAY IN PERSON.

I WISH HER THE VERY BEST AND LONG LASTING SUSTAINED GOOD HEALTH. SHE DESERVES IT.

PAUL

  • Our dog pooping. The long-awaited poop. There was so much in there, he actually went 3 times in a matter of seconds. A very proud moment.
  • Tenor is pretty much back to his old self these days -- 8 days after surgery. Now he's just bored.
  • Tenor is eating fine and getting around okay 8 days after surgery -- but he still won't put much weight on his foot.
  • Our dog is resting on a bed sheet out in the backyard after TPLO surgery.
  • Tenor dog is crouching down into a seated position -- on top of the bad leg! It didn't phase him at all. By the way the tongue action is because he'd just had a drink of water.
  • Here, Tenor is lying directly on his bad leg. No worries. The only thing that was difficult for him during the first week of recovery was lying down on bulky things like blankets and dog pillows. It seemed to put extra pressure on parts of his leg.
  • Ice cubes are good for a dog right after surgery. I don't think our dog ate or drank much while he was in the hospital. He seemed to be running a fever, and he couldn't get enough water and ice cubes.
  • Here you can see how bad the swelling is in the right rear ankle -- and this is while he's lying down! The swelling was on top of the foot, as well as in the ankle.
  • A closeup of our dog's stitches and bruising after TPLO surgery.
  • The x-rays of our dog's leg, post-surgery. This is his right rear leg. The metal plate is on the inside of his leg, the screws point to the outside of his leg.
  • Dr. Beckman is showing us how to place a towel under his belly/groin area, then with both ends of the towel in your hand, lift the dog's back-end up so the toes don't touch the ground.
  • Tenor is wishing he could just go to sleep and not feel so uncomfortable any more.
