How To Teach A Dog To “Lick Your Lips” On Command (Less Drool!)

Can you stop a dog from drooling? No. But you CAN teach the dog to lick their lips to keep the drool from dripping everywhere!

I taught my dog to lick his lips ON COMMAND. This was my way of preventing all the drool around his mouth from being flung around the house!

My dog is a heavy drooler! So when he was young, I started teaching him the command: “Lick your lips!” It didn’t take him long to figure out what I was referring to.

How did he learn this trick?

Easy!… Every time I saw him lick his lips ON HIS OWN, I would immediately praise him and give him a treat.

Of course, at first he had no idea why he was getting the praise and the reward. But over time, he started to associate the fact that every time he got praise and a treat “out of the blue”… he just so happened to be licking his lips at that time!

After many days and weeks of me trying to catch him in the act of “licking his lips” on his own… and me consistently rewarding him for this behavior… he eventually caught on that licking his lips earned him praise and a treat!

To this day, he still gets praise and a treat whenever he licks his lips ON COMMAND! And, thankfully, I now have much less drool being flung around my house, as a result.

My dog will ALWAYS lick his lips on cue now! Which is a handy way for me to get my dog to clean up the drool himself — before he flings it around and I have to wipe it up.

Now that’s a useful dog trick, don’t you think?!

So, can you stop a dog from drooling?… Not exactly. But you can certainly teach your dog to control the drool and prevent it from being flung all over your house.

UPDATE:

I taught my next 2 dogs to do this same trick!

To this day, they will ALWAYS lick their lips on command.

Since they’re not as heavy droolers as my Lab was, this is just a fun dog trick now (more than an aid in keeping the house clean).

Check out all of the other dog tricks I’ve taught my dogs!
