Win 3+ Hours of Dog Training With Cesar Millan!

cesar-millan-mastering-leadership-dvd-set-prize.jpg If you're a dog owner, there's no doubt you know of "the dog whisperer," Cesar Millan.

Well, how would you like win 3+ hours of in-home, private training with the dog whisperer himself?

That's right dog lovers, we're hooking you up with it in this month's contest! One lucky winner will receive the Cesar Millan 3-DVD set called Mastering Leadership, Volumes 1-3.

What? Oh, you thought Cesar Millan would be coming to your home in person? My bad. Whatever could have given you that idea?

I mean geez, we're good... but not quite that good.

Why This DVD Set ROCKS

We are big fans of Cesar Millan around here.

We especially like his dog training DVDs. They're so jam-packed with helpful info and cool dog training tips that you actually want to watch them again and again.

It seems like you learn something new each time you watch!

Here's our review of Cesar Millan's 3-DVD set, Mastering Leadership Volumes 1-3.

And here's what other dog owners think of the same DVD set.

We also like how Cesar Millan -- through his TV show and videos -- focuses mostly on training you how to be a better pet parent and pack leader -- rather than training your dog how to be a better dog. (They know how to be dogs just fine on their own!)

When my wife and I first rescued our 2 black lab mixes we knew we needed to get them in obedience training. Just like Cesar Millan in his dog training DVDs, our dog trainer at the local Pet Smart told us that we would be the ones being trained... not so much our dogs.

...and it made ALL of the difference!

Check out a clip from the 2nd DVD in this set called "Becoming a Pack Leader":

I also have a deaf dog and use hand signals but the most important thing I've learned about training dogs or just living with dogs is understanding their energy. I have 6 dogs at the moment - 5 spayed females and just brought home a 7 yr old neutered male from the shelter. He is having some difficulty settling in and attacked my deaf Pit mix (the sweetest dog in the world). This poor boy's energy is a mess and it's going to take a lot of work to bring him around but with help from Cesar I know he'll be great.

Be consistent! Common sense, but needs repeating.H

Gianna

Being consistent in what you ask and expect is the key.

Lily Kwan

The most helpful training tip that I've used is to be patient and don't stress out about it, everything will work out.

Veronica Garrett

The best training tip I found is to be patient. Don't expect quick solutions.

Sweepsqueen

Use positive reinforcement and be consistent.

kathy p

Incorporate obedience training into your daily routine - your dog could perform a "sit" before you give him his dinner, or a "down stay" when you go get the mail.

dawn

being consistent, praises and treats. But also have confidence in your self.

RoeC

Positive reinforcement has made a huge difference.

Sarah C

Consistency is the best tip and really works!

Tiffany S.

The most helpful training tip is to constantly take them outside when they are little to try to teach the habit of using the bathroom outside. We love Cesar here and would love to win this! Thank you!

Jay F.

Being consistent in rewards at the start helps greatly. It was also good to have different people in the family trying to teach the same trick in the same way.

Susan Smith

I started training my dog early with praise and treats. I would repeat my commands which seemed to help, using my hands and voice.

whippetmom

Positive reinforcement and praise.

christopher h

best tip i got was to be consistent

Sherri B.

Positive reinforcement seems to work the best for my dogs. Of course, they will have a long way to go, but we are working on it. Thanks for the chance for some help!

Know your strenghts and weaknesses and don't be afraid of asking for help if needed.

Happi Shopr

positive reinforment works best for us

Melanie

Use a strong voice, and don't give in.
My brother in law is excellant at that with his dog..Im having trouble with mine.

Andria

Use a gentle leader collar. I have a great dane, and she used to pull me down the street every time I took her for a walk. I tried other collars and lots of tips, but nothing worked for me until I got a gentle leader. Now I love taking Sadie for walks.

Jenny Gibbons

The best tip I got was to focus on positive reinforcement of good acts rather than trying to punish unwanted acts.

The best training tip we have ever used is to make sure our dog is well socialized. With our first two dogs, we didn't have a clue how important it was to take them out into public and get them accustomed to other people and dogs. Then my adult daughter moved home and introduced us to socializing....and we did that with our next two dogs. Not only do these dogs LOVE people and other dogs, they have taught our first two how to be pack members and how to behave around people!

We teach our dog to stay out of the kitchen when we are cooking. This tape would be great to teach our 5 year old Golden Retriever Mix to get along with her new daschund friend which we are getting in two weeks!

When I first started working on Linus's training in puppy kindergarten our trainer told us our favorite training tip that we'll never forget:

"A rolled up newspaper can be an effective training tool when used properly. For instance, use the rolled-up newspaper if your dog chews something or has a housebreaking accident.

Take the rolled-up newspaper and hit yourself over the head as you repeat the phrase, “I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG, I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG.” If your dog laughs at you when you do this, praise him."

Dan

This would be great! Our 1.5 year old dog is very overprotective (like, attacking people...luckily she's small) and suffers from some separation anxiety.

carol

Our Boston Terrier Joanie can be stubborn, our best tip was to be as tenacious as she is when training her, not to give in, especially when she begs at the dinner table, which is a big no-no. Thanks for the chance to win.

be consistent, hand signals and letting them be dogs!!

Being consistent, hand signals, and letting them be dogs when you can.

ashley

i believe in teaching my dog manners! They don't just need to know commands.. they should know to wait while you walk through the door, to stand beside you - not under you, etc. these are things learned through everyday life and discipline but they are vital to having a well behaved and trainable dog

Monique Rizzo

We are getting our rott puppy in December. This would be great. Thanks for the chance.
mogrill@comcast.net

I agree with a few others that said body language is extremely important. Dogs seem to respond to it more than we often realize.

Jeff

Attempting to keep a calm strong energy has helped ...

Lisa D

I watch the dog whisperer show and have used the little sound thing he does with my dog to make her stop barking. It helps alot. also I don't let her walk into the house until we have gone through the door. Most of the time she waits for us now.

Nicole Humphrey

I just rescued two puppies from different litters, so I have learned that consistancy is my best friend. As long as I use the same commands and teaching techniques with both puppies, it seems as though they feed off of one another and learn from the other's mistakes. I have learned so much from Cesar Milan!

Just be consistent and speak in an authorative voice.

mickeyfan

As in child "training" you must be consistent. And if you are a couple or family, ALL must be consistent. We're not great pack leaders...but we're trying!

Chris

Cesar you are a dog god!

Alka

Rewarding your dog when he does something good is my best tip! It really works

Jennifer Woosley

My biggest tip i"ve learned about training my dog is...whipping yelling or scolding really never works when teaching your dog. Using treats and praise works the best when trying to train you dog.

ky2here

Consistency, confidence and fidelity are key.

Shannon

If our yellow lab is pulling too much when we are walking him, we stop, make him sit, and tell him to behave. We also keep our dogs on a short leash when on walks; we learned this from Cesar!

SANDY

the pack leader and hand signals- have seen this on oprah and rr

Tina

When your dog is off leash and unresponsive to the "come" command, walk AWAY from him instead of towards him. He will be more likely to come to you.

My biggest tip- is always remember that a dog is an animal first.... he is a dog number one, and other things after.
I have one of Cesars books and have found that rule to be the most important- it would be so helpful if everyone knew it and respected it.
Just because your dog might be a great dog, when they are off/on leash no matter how well behaved, they are a dog. They have basic instincts that will sometimes override even the love they have of their human and their Alpha (you)
My Odin is a wonderful dog, companion, and friend but he needs reminding occasionally. I would love Cesar's DVDs to learn even more!

Didapr

I've already started training my puppies with Cesar's techniques. If they whine or cry when I am trying to feed them, I wait till they are calm-submissive. I will not pet them if they are an a excited state. I love Cesar Millan. He is a genius. I only wish I knew of him 15 years ago with my other dog. I think his techniques would of made her a different dog.

Pat belanger

You must become the pack leader. Like going through the door first. Also I like the way he handles it ,if a dog becomes to aggresive by layying on his side. He doesn't hurt the dog. That treadmills do wonders for dogs that need excercise. When owners like us have health problems and are unable to walk. Our dog loves it. Also I have learned to make my dog enjoy getting her nails cut she used to fight me. Now I rub her belly calm her down and wow shes good and no fighting she lets me cut her nails. Afterwards I rub her belly a little more. So shes happy now and content nomore fighting me.

The most important training tip I can think of is CONSISTENCY! Always doing/saying the same thing at the same time! We have to make it as easy as we can for our dog to understand us if we want to get them to understand the training!

I own 4 rescue babies and love them all more than anything else so I am very careful that whatever is good for one is good for them all. As hard as it can be at times, I don't play favorites. They know what's going on, trust me. When it's treat time, they all get a treat. When I go walking with one, they must all go. And whatever I do, I can never pull out of the driveway without all of them going for a ride. I think they are rotten to the core............AND I wonder why???

Candi

My most helpful training tip with my dog was training my dog to ring a chime/bell by our back door when he wanted to go outside. Having an indoor/outdoor dog he likes to go out alot and with babies in the house this helps them to keep sleeping while my dog still communicates with me without barking. Just rub their nose or paw in the bell everytime you take them outside then eventually they will ring it themselves and it didn't take long. Now if only we can get him to obey his other commands. Help Ceaser!!!

The best advice I've learned for training a dog is to NOT only use verbal commands but HAND signals! Dogs respond faster to body language (like Cesar teaches!) and my dogs have learned 2x faster with hand signals than with "words".
I have a deaf dog and she knows over 15 commands and phrases now! If she can learn, any dog can!
