Can you imagine going days, weeks, or even months without taking a shower, brushing your teeth, or clipping your nails?

Of course not! How nasty would that be?

Unfortunately, that's the case for thousands of dogs every year. Not only is that just plain gross, it's also dangerous. Proper grooming is essential for dogs to stay healthy, yet only about half of dog owners realize that, according to a recent PetSmart survey.

How To Win This Dog Grooming Package

This PetSmart grooming package will be a nice change of pace for both you and your dog!

Dog Grooming Tips

To see what a full-service PetSmart grooming event looks like and to get some helpful tips if you're grooming your dog yourself, check this video out:

The Furminator is the best pet brush to own if your dog is one that has a shedding undercoat (like my 2 black lab mixes, sheesh!). Check out the Furminator treatment you can get at PetSmart:

Linda Erickson, PetSmart's grooming expert offers these tips to help keep your dog clean and healthy in between groomer visits:

  • Dogs should be brushed before bathing and washed only with shampoos specially designed for dogs. (Human shampoos have a pH level that can be harmful to pets.)

  • Dogs with long, flowing hair should be brushed daily.

  • Dogs with short hair and heavy undercoats benefit from a brushing 3 to 5 times a week.

  • While combing and brushing your dog, check areas for unusual problems such as hair loss, inflammation, unusual tenderness, or lumps under the skin.

  • When brushing your dog's teeth, make sure to use a toothbrush and toothpaste specially designed for pets.

Happy commenting and I can't wait to hear some of your grooming tips & tricks below and see some dog grooming in action when you post photos on the Fun Dogs Facebook page. Good luck!

UPDATE:
Congratulations to Melissa in Baltimore (and her dog Zeus) for winning the contest! Melissa's comment that entered her to win was:

"My long-haired Golden Retriever would be impossible to comb if I didn't keep on top of the situation with daily comb-outs. I started doing this when he was a pup, and now I just show him the comb and he flops down on the floor! Thanks."

Congratulations again!

taking a bath with my dog is the easiest way to get him clean and keep him relaxed. Fortunately he is a very small dog.

Took a grooming course for my westies, now that's the ticket!!

ok..your tip to grooming dog is cool

I have a cock-a-poo and one thing that makes grooming him so much easier is to use conditioner and not just shampoo. It makes it so much easier to comb his hair when he gets out of the bath!

I bring something from home - a towel, a toy - to be with them in the cage while they wait for the groomer to work their magic

What makes grooming my dog easier Making my husband do it! LOL

My Shih Tzu freaks when he is groomed. They charged me an extra handling fee because of it.

I've learned that if I constantly talk to him sweetly and reassure him, then he can handle it. Silly boy!

I have 2 long hair chihuahuas, one is a dog from the rescue shelter we got last week. A quick brush everyday helps keep them knot free and a quick spray of kids hair detangler on their fluffy tails really helps, thats where most of the knots were when we brought the rescued dog home.

My 12 yr old pomapoo has to take a shower with daddy because he wont let me bathe him or brush his hair.

Christie

I use a RapidBath on my dog. While it doesn't have quite the power it advertises, especially in my low water pressure area, it still saves time and does a pretty good job.

We let the kids bath the dog because they think it's fun and don't mind getting soaked!

Dana Tavener

I actually use the pedipaws that my husband bought late one night, to keep my dogs nails short in between spa visits

Jill Myrick

We have a Maltese and a ShiPoo.
Two thinks that I have found that work great are the Furminator and a Sham Wow.
I use the furminator bfore bathing them to remove all of the excess hair and after bathing them I wrap them in the sham wow a few times to remove excess water.
Afterward I blow dry them with the dryer on low. Which is definitely their favorite part.
Thank you so much for the chance to win.

I use to take my dog to get her groomed for years. She developed hip dispalysia, so I started bathing and grooming her myself. I didn't think our bond could get any stronger but it did and she enjoyed getting groomed. My tip is buy a good clipper, like a Turbo A5, it makes the job a snap. My dog even likes me to use the hair dryer on her, she keeps turning so I can get her from all sides.

I could not live without my furminator. I have two Alaskan Malamutes and the furminator is the only thing that gets thru those thick coats.

I cut my dogs' nails after they get back from the dog park. They are so worn out they don't fight me and this makes that chore a breeze.

Teresa L

I bathe my dog myself. He is crippled and has some health problems stemming from his birth. He loves the pampering from someone he knows and loves. LOL :)

I love the crazy dog shampoo that smells like baby powder. u only use a small amount and the dogs smell great for a long time!

Tatum V

Since Frank thinks he is a kid we get the kids to help. He loves all of the attention he forgets about whats being done. He loves getting praise and a good rub down. It's so sweet.

Lori Walker

The Furminator brush saves us a whole lot of hassle! We have two dogs that shed A LOT and it saves us plenty of sweeping!

Mike Anderson

brush dogs daily to maintain coat.

Mary T.

During bath time I give Bub a good massage. He relaxes enough for me to be able to clean his eyes, ears, and teeth without stress to either of us.

cathi rushing

we use an out side kiddy pool

Monique Rizzo

My dog loves to hav a good grooming!! Thanks for the chance. mogrill@comcast.net

I have no great tips...wish I did. Miss Sophia Loren is a large Aussie Shep with a mind of her own. I brush her frequently, but she's not a fan of the bathing (at least when I do it)!

Christy

The Furminator has reduced the black lab hair in our house dramatically!

Melissa D

My long-haired Golden Retriever would be impossible to comb if I didn't keep on top of the situation with daily comb-outs. I started doing this when he was a pup, and now I just show him the comb and he flops down on the floor! Thanks.

My dog loves to get groomed...as long as your touching her she'll be good!

Carol Lawrence

Not a tip,but our 15 year old terrier mix Jellybean takes two days to groom because his fur is so thick. jelly15301@gmail.com

Tari Lawson

My favorite dog grooming too, good old fashioned scissors ;)

Pamela Callahan

I really like the PediPaws nail grinder. It helps to keep my Bella's nails trimmed without using those awful clippers!

Lisa Rose

I brush my dog every day to cut down on the shedding and mats.

Tina J

I'm a first time dog owner and we just got our dog two months ago. We took him to be groomed at Petco so I really don't have a tip sorry. I would love to learn to do it myself cause paying to get them groomed is just too much.

welll i give bella a treat while shes getting brushed.. it helps!!

Karen Medlin

Don't have any tips, The best thing I can think of is a good shower head.

Russell Moore

I finally figured out that the Dremel tool I have had for years is the best thing to do my dogs nails with

Theresa Shafer

Treats and praise is the best way to ease your dog into the tub,, shower, and getting them used to the tools you must used.
An example is getting used to the clippers. Show it. Have it touch them. All calm and easy. They look and go as they wish, praise when they come near and look. touch them with praise and stroke them with clipper. Touch their toes and continue the the stoking and praise. Then clip one nail.
It is all about earning trust. And getting to know the body language of your dog.

Erica C.

I give the dog a bath in a kiddie pool outside...that way he thinks he is having fun instead of getting a bath!

Michelle Draveski

Ok stupid I know but you dont know my dogs ego or how stubburn she is. To get Boo in the bath I have to spend a good 20 minutes telling her she is a pretty princess then brush her hair and mine with MY brush. If she see's the dog brush its all over.

the febreeze pet groomer is cool.

Amanda

I don't wash my dog that often she just ends up getting dirty right after, but I like to cut her nails after she gets a bath it makes it much easier.

Brigitte Walsh

I couldn't do without my slicker brush for my shih tzu, Yoshi. Its amazing how it works out the tangles and mats, and Yoshi loves getting brushed with it....the sensation really relaxes him.

I wish I had a tip to give -- I pretty much have to sneak up on my dog with her brush, because as soon as she see it she turns upside down!

sandy

may be a bad thing but be calm when they are getting baths- keep it calm and they will get to the point where they love it. Sometimes they jump in the bath all by themselves when I am running the water for myself or when I say bathtime. The hair and nails i have really not conquered yet- expecially the nails

I started cutting all three of my dogs nails using standard dog nail clippers. None of them were big fans of the nail clippers so one day I decided to try using a Dremel.

I did a lot of research on Dremel's including the PediPaws and according to reviews the Dremel 7700-02 MultiPro was the best for trimming dog nails. I slowly introduced my dogs to the Dremel using treats and praise. Eventually they got used to the sound and feel of the Dremel.

Now when my dogs hear the sound of the Dremel they come running to me. I guess they figured out Dremel = Treat time!

My dog Lucy is actually very patient in the shower. I suspect she MAY actually like it. We have a rubber glove thing with nubby bristles on it and after we shampoo we brush it over her and it gets sooo much excess fur off, she is always softer and cooler after the bath!

Debbie

I'm still learning how to groom our two Maltese. But I've done all of our dogs' nails over the last 30 years. And the best thing EVER is the Peticure. It makes the job SO much easier and they don't mind it...too much =)

Ashley

I usually let my dog jump in the shower. That way she can eat the way and I can put dog shampoo on her. (Make sure to wear a swimsuit)

My other trick is the crazy daisy. We hook the old sprinkler, in the shape of a daisy, up and let the dog run around. When she's wet you put the dog shampoo on, and then turn the daisy back on for some more water fun. Make sure the water gets all the shampoo off.
