Beneful Dog Food: A Review
For me, it all started with a free copy of Dog's Life, a free 4-color magazine subscription from Beneful.
On the back of my first issue of Dog's Life was a $2.00 coupon good on any size bag of Beneful dog food.
I used that coupon at my local Target. And my dog has been hooked on Beneful ever since.
My Dog Enjoys Mealtimes More
To be honest, I still use Nutro dog food as the base for my dog's meals.I merely mix the Beneful in with the Nutro and pour it into my dog's food bowl.
I use a standard Tupperware or Rubbermaid cereal box-type container and I premix the Nutro with the Beneful in there -- at a ratio of 3 to 1 (...just eyeballing it -- more Nutro than Beneful).
Shake it all up in the plastic container, and there you have it... the perfect meal for my dog that stores in a handy container and lasts several weeks.
The way I look at it, Beneful is a great complement to my dog's diet. He absolutely loves it.
It's just that I have a long history with Nutro products. For years, I've seen my dogs thrive on Nutro, so I'm not really inclined to switch my dog's food at this time.
Another Way I Incorporate Beneful Into My Dog's Diet
I use Kong toys whenever we leave the dog home alone. I usually fill them with BilJac and peanut butter -- often with an added "treat" thrown in for good measure.Lately, that "treat" has been several pellets of the Beneful dog food. I keep a small plastic container of Beneful pellets near the peanut butter jar and Kongs in our kitchen. As soon as I crack the lid on the Beneful, my dog comes running!
I think one of the reasons he likes it is because it's a semi-moist dry dog food. Technically, they say it's "a dry dog food with moist chewy chunks".
One of the reasons I like it best is because it comes in a unique zip-lock bag. It's quite convenient.
What I Didn't Know About Beneful...
When I was in the store and checking out the different flavors of Beneful dog food, I simply chose the one that had chicken & rice in it. Why? Because my dogs have always thrived on lamb, chicken, and rice products.Had I looked at the label more closely, I would have seen that the flavors actually corresponded to some very specific "benefits".
For instance, the chicken & rice (green bag) that I bought is the "healthy weight" formulation which is a lower calorie dog food. My dog doesn't necessarily need a weight management type of food, but since he's mostly eating Nutro, a little of this each day won't hurt him. Like I said... Beneful is the perfect complement in our household!

It's a great magazine, by the way! My issue had 16 full-color pages and lots of great ideas for fun ways to interact with your dog. I actually underlined tons of things inside, so I'd remember to try those things with my own dog.

Hi! I am here to tell you my story of sussess with beneful. My dog Honey was biting so badly she would chew her skin until it would bleed and she would lose all her fur from her waist back she would be totally bald.she would have continuous ear infections, I changed her food to beneful and she has a full thick coat and her ears have cleared up. I will stick with beneful from this point on. I am a very happy custumer and so is Honey.
NO dog food should contain SUGAR! Beneful does!
And always look for MEAT 1st listed in a quality dog food.
Beneful is horrible! I would never buy it in my life. I'm glad you don't only feed your dog beneful, because heshe could get sick. You know that picture of raining human food you put on there, wich seems to be beneful's "Slogon", well, look, there's corn and wheat on there! low quality ingredients. Your dog would be perfectly healthy if you can some how get himher hooked off beneful
It's a good thing you don't feed your dogs a complete Beneful diet. We put both our aged dogs on Beneful, solely (3 months apart), and within one year both dogs have diabetes, are on insulin 2 x per day, are blind from cataracts (side effect of diabetes) and will have to stay on the insulin until their death.
The only things common to the dogs were their owners, drinking water and Beneful. The chances are better than average that the dogfood is the culprit. One dog is inside all the time the other lives in the back yard. I contacted Purina and they sent me the analysis of the Beneful that is not on the bag..it contains 41% carbohydrates. No wonder your dogs love it, sugar! Our dogs would eat it as long as it was present. We have filed a claim with Purina; however, I never expect to get one dime. But "by gosh" they don't have to watch their beloved pets walk into furniture and/or trees, etc. It will absolutely break your heart. We put our dogs on Canidae Dogfood after putting them on insulin and their insulin dosage has not changed since. It is wonderful (but expensive) dogfood. Well, pet lovers can make up their own mind but take some advice before the surprise comes, have your dogs blood glucose checked while they are still healthy especially if their diet is solely Beneful dogfood. One more note: Purina is already involved in a class action lawsuit for misrepresenting Beneful ingredients.
Purina is using tricky pricing - I switched to Beneful a few yrs ago and my dogs loved it - went from Iams - too expensive. I was paying $25 for 40lb bag at Sam's for quite a while but today the price was $28 for a 37lb bag - deception and dishonesty - I am looking at a new choice and it sounds like Nutro may be better all the way around! One of my dogs is getting older, 12 yrs, and I don't want any problems!

I just discovered my pug is horribly allergic to Beneful. I threw away the rest of it, as it caused his tummy to get all red and itchy. I put him back on his old food, and you can already see the difference!
It wonderful. My dogs love the weight mananagement food. They have keep their weight.
i just started my puupy from iams to beneful. i read alot of stuff about foods, and what is best, and he seems to love it! he loves meal time, so, so far i like beneful!
Beneful dog food is not wonderful. I don't think it's too bad that you are using it almost as a treat, but the main ingredient in it, is corn, which as you probably know is not easily digested. Keep it up with the Nutro, they ARE great.
